The advantage is that everything is stored in one spot. Being open source, there is a built in community aspect which means you can get support from a wide variety of users. And if you have a programmer on staff you can be part of the development.

The CiviCRM community is holding their second meetup in the San Francisco. Anyone who is interested in using or developing for CiviCRM is invited. There will be a presentation from an organization currently using CiviCRM followed by an open question and answer session.
