Melinda and Rob Babiak from Look What Mom Found and Dad Too! An Interview

Unique bloggers, Melinda and Rob Babiak work together to review products and share about what their family is going through on their mommy and daddy blog (parent blog?).  I am frankly jealous about their blog header, which really stands out – just perfect for this team who are on the cutting edge of blogging. With them, you get both a female and male point of view.

Tell me about your Blog

LookWhatMomFound…and Dad too! started out as my “mommy” blog as a place to share my internet shopping finds.  As a SAHM living in a new city I needed someone to talk to about my fun finds while shopping.  The blog has morphed into so much more especially in the last few months.  Rob and I have teamed up as a mommy & daddy blog to talk about more than just shopping.  We share fun family stories, honest product reviews, unique giveaways and lots of other things.

What was your first blog?

My first blog was a family blog that lasted about 9 months.  Rob’s 1st blog was about cycling but it was such a specific niche he found it hard to keep it current with fresh content.  His next blog venture was his family blog called Peanut Butter and Smelly’s Dad, he started getting approached to do product reviews and thats when we decided to work together.

What is the biggest tip you would give to product reviewers?
Be ORGANIZED, this is my biggest downfall.  I’m easily sidetracked so I schedule blog posts about a month in advance to keep us straight on certain things.
Are you contacted by advertisers or do you contact them or both?
I don’t reach out for advertising as much as I probably should.  I know there is money to be made in blogging but I’m not sure who to reach out to for legitimate opportunities.

What is your favorite product that you have reviewed?  Personally I LOVE my BearPaw Loki slippers, I wear them everyday.  Rob’s favorite are his New Balance sneakers and the Eureka tent we use for camping.

What do bloggers do that you wish they wouldn’t/do that you like?
You aren’t owed anything.  If a company turns down your approach or decides against advertising, say thank you and good luck and move forward. A blogger can’t be mad if they didn’t receive that “awesome” opportunity that is floating around

What advertiser would you like to work with given a chance?

We’d like to work with a family friendly brand that we are already familiar with, a company we support/shop regardless of the blog like Campbells Soup Company or Trader Joes or Kohls.

Where do you see growth in the blogging field?

I think it would be advertising and partnerships, being an ambassador or spokesperson of sorts.

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

We curse like truck drivers.

What is on your iPod?

Rob mostly has heavy metal with some old hiphop mixed in.  He says the angrier the music the better workout he has.  I have a bigger selection with includes Michael Buble, Beyonce, Rick Springfield, Prince, Linkin Park and Etta James. On a daily basis I set it to shuffle and listen to whatever plays.

What events do you attend?

We attended IZEAFest 09, it was a great eye opener to some things we were doing wrong.  We were able to meet great people who turned into great friends.  On March 6th, I’m (Melinda) attending SITS Bloggy Boot Camp in Baltimore. We have talked about attending Blogher10, crossing our fingers.

How do you prefer to communicate?

email, phone, twitter, whatever is easier that particular day

Who would you recommend, and why?
I’m going to stay away from the review/giveaway blogs and tell you who I read
Pajamas and Coffee, I’m a new reader of hers but she’s funny
Dad-o-Matic, a great mix of dads from all walks of life talking about everything under the sun
The Bloggess, she’s got a twisted mind but oh so funny but so NOT safe for work or kids
The Secret is in the Sauce, another great community that is all about support and recognition
Dad’s House, a real and often funny perspective on life from a single dad’s POV
MomLogic, stories from moms about all kinds of things
Maria Bailey, a great inspiration for women
Chris Brogan, makes sense of Social Media to those not in that field
CalgaryDaddy, a personal site about a new dad with an adorable little baby boy
CopyBlogger, another great source for Social Media, content strategy and succesfull branding/marketing
What is one thing people can do for you?

Be real, people can spot a fake.
What is in the works for the near future?
We are going to be working on the End Child Hunger Now campaign with Conagra Foods Foundation this spring.
