Twitter competitions are a great way to keep twittering interesting, gain followers and be creative. Here are some of the best twitter competitions I’ve heard about over the past year:
1. @RealHughJackman: Hugh Jackman, the actor who plays Wolverine in the X-Men movie series, has announced a Twitter competition for $100,000! He will donate the money to a chosen non-profit of someone who can convince him why in 140 characters. Here is the exact tweet:
“I will donate 100K to one individual’s favorite non profit organization. Of course, you must convince me why by using 140 characters or less.”
2. @aplusk and @cnnbrk: Ashton Kutcher specifically challenged CNN to see who could get to 1,000,000 followers first when each were in the 900,000 range. A week later, this twitter competition has pushed @aplusk to over 1.3 million and CNN to over 1.1. So who won? Kutcher won by less than 2,000 followers. Along with his victory he is donating 10,000 mosquito nets for World Malaria Day in April.
3. @stephenfry: Stephen Fry, British actor and comedian, held an intellectual twitter competition with this tweet:
“L=50 in Roman. The best tweet containing exactly 50 Ls will win. All tweets to contain the tag #L and none to exceed 140 character limit SF”
4. @copyblogger: CopyBlogger.com ran a short story twitter competition. You guessed it, the competition was to tell a story in 140 characters or less. I loved their original example:
“Three flies are bugging me on the deck. I kill two, and spare the third. “Go tell the others this is what happens,” I warn as he buzzes off.”
These twitter competitions show creativity and get people interested and keep true to what social media is all about- relationships and communication. As Twitter continues to expand, I can’t wait to see what twitter competitions come next!
