Tell me about your Blog?

Blog till you drop! is an advertising, social media and technology blog which I started writing in 2006, when blogs were still in their infancy in the UK. I mostly write about the latest social media tools, or cool advertising/social media campaigns that make me tick! I landed my dream job last year thanks to my blog, and I now work in London as a Social Media Strategist (although my dream is to move to NYC some day).

What was your first blog?

My first blog was blog till you drop, and I am still going strong, almost 3 years on! I also keep a Tumblr digital scrapbook, Cosmopolitan… with a zest of lemon (http://cosmopolitan.tumblr.com), which is a collection of random things I like on the Internet.

What is the biggest tip you would give to a newbie blogger?

Don’t give up! Establishing a blog is a two-way process, and building your readership takes time; read and comment on other blogs, but most importantly forge relationships with other bloggers. I recently travelled to NYC and finally met some bloggers I’ve known virtually for a while – that’s how powerful blogging can be!

What do advertisers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

Pop-up ads make me cringe, especially the ones you don’t sem to be able to get rid of on your screen!

What do bloggers do that you wish they wouldn’t?

I can’t stand lists of Delicious links – I really don’t see the point of doing this. If you want to include links in a blog post, expand on the topic and share your opinions.

Where do you see growth in the blogging field?

Blogging is still very niche in the sense that only bloggers read blogs – I’d like to think that non-blogging Internet users will find blog they like and start engaging with these bloggers.

What new ideas are advertisers coming up with to take advantage of new trends?

Advertisers and PRs are increasingly using social media campaigns to influence consumers’ decision-making process and there are some real gems out there – my favourite campaign in 2009 so far has to be the promotion of Coraline the movie – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4woy-_3azzs – Wieden and Kennedy did a fantastic job!

What do you do to improve the world?

I am a positive person and I’d like to think that people can rely on me

What do you do that is green?

I recycle everything, do not use plastic bags, switch the lights off, and I always buy energy saving light-bulbs…

What is one thing about you that not many people know?

I have music notes tattooed on my lower back

What’s your favorite book?

That’s a tough question – I am a bit of a bookworm! I love Shakespeare (I studied English literature at uni in France), Agatha Christie, Dan Brown, J.K Rowling (I am a huge Harry Potter fan), but also geeky Internet related books (usually something to do with SEO) as well as social media books (Groundswell is a must!)

What is on your iPod?

Lots of different types of music – indie/rock, French, Italian and Spanish music, Jazz/Soul, club and trance music…

What are your contact details (email, company, blog, facebook, myspace, forums, etc)?

Tumblr: http://cosmopolitan.tumblr.com

Twitter: @blogtillyoudrop

Email: [email protected]

Facebook: www.facebook.com/laurenceborel

What events do you go to?

I am a regular on the social media scene in London and attend a number of networking events such as the awesome London Bloggers Meet Up, a variety of tweet ups. Open Music media, Barcamps, Linkedin in London…

How do you prefer to communicate?

If it’s personal, phone or Facebook, if it’s professional Twitter or email – there’s only so much you can say in 140 characters.

Who would you recommend, and why?

Mack Collier: the very first blog I ever read! Mack truly is a social media guru! (USA) http://moblogsmoproblems.blogspot.com/

Jason Falls: a must read for all things social media (USA) http://www.socialmediaexplorer.com/

C.B. Whittemore: a really good retail blog detailing the consumer experience(USA) http://flooringtheconsumer.blogspot.com/

Phil Barrett: a blog about the latest mobile news (Canada) – http://www.burningthebacon.com/

Neville Hobson: our very own home-grown social media ‘guru’ (UK) http://www.nevillehobson.com/

Rax Lakhani writes an excellent digital PR blog (UK) – www.raxraxrax.com

Andrea Colaianni: always on the top of the latest trends and a really nice guy too! (Italy) – http://www.womarketing.netsons.org/

What is one thing people can do for you?

Smile more – life’s too short to be moody all the time!

  • She seems like a delightful person, and I will take a look at her blog. I just started blogging my self and I love writing and sharing my opinions, views, and feelings with the globe.

One thing I must say Lolly I highly disagree with you about is that only bloggers read blogs. There is a whole business set up around making money from people who are looking for information. That information is in the form of a blog.

    Great interview.

  • What a wonderful interview, and with one of my very favorite bloggers! Thank you, Lolly, for mentioning Flooring The Consumer and including me in such a stellar lineup.

  • I agree with what you said about Wieden and kennedy and coraline. it was a really cool campaign. another one that I have really liked is butterfingers social media campaign
